Ask for a Written Scope
A written scope of work should describe dimensions, thickness, base preparation, reinforcement, finish, removal, and cleanup. Verbal quotes leave too much room for later disagreement.
Compare Estimates on the Same Terms
Two estimates aren't comparable unless the scope is the same. If one includes removal and base prep and the other doesn't, they're not really the same number.
Ask About Process
How will the site be prepared? How will the pour be handled? How will the finish be applied? Contractors who can answer clearly tend to work more carefully.
Communication
Notice how a contractor communicates during the estimate. Slow responses, vague answers, or dodged questions before the job usually don't improve after the job.
Insurance and Liability
Ask about insurance and liability coverage. This is a normal question and any contractor should be able to speak to it.
Confirm the Written Agreement
Before work begins, the scope, price, and expectations should be captured in writing. Both sides benefit from that.
